The giraffe has the longest tongue of any animal, measuring up to 20 inches long.

There are over 1,000 animal species that are endangered across the world.  

The "Big Five" is a group of the largest animals of Africa:  the lion, leopard, cape buffalo, elephant and the rhino. 


The four cat species making up the "Great Cats" are the lion, tiger, leopard and jaguar.


The four ape species making up the "Great Apes" are the Gorilla, Orangutan, Chimpanzee and Bonobo. 

Israel was the first country in the world to ban the sale of fur.  

A tigers paw prints are called "pug marks".

Baby spiders eat their mother when they run out of food.

A flamingo can bend it's knees both ways.




Elephants are pregnant for 2 years before giving birth to a 250 pound baby.


Millions of trees are accidentally planted by squirrels that bury nuts and forget where they hid them.

There is a shark called the "goblin shark" which has only been seen around 50 times since its discovery in 1897.

Fish have the same density as water.

A headless cockroach can survive for a few weeks.  Its life would finally end due to starvation.

Polar bears have black skin despite their white fur.

Before they are even born, sand tiger sharks eat their brothers and sisters.

Many venomous snake's can kill the second they are born.

A polar bear's outer fur is called "guard hair".

The scales of a crocodile are made of the same substance that hooves and fingernails are made of.  

A hummingbird can fly up to 2,500 miles on one journey.
 

All polar bears are left handed and their liver is extremely poisonous, as it contains large amounts of vitamin C.

Throughout their lives, crocodiles grow new teeth to replace old ones.  

The butterfly was once known as the "flutterby". Why butter? Some suggest that it was due to many butterflies being yellow in color, like butter. Others believe it is based upon the yellow excrement of butterflies. Still others hold to the notion that butterflies were thought to land in kitchens and drink milk or butter left uncovered.  

A snail can sleep for up to three years at a time.



The tusks of an elephant weigh around 200 pounds. 


An ostrich's brain is smaller than its eye.  

Lions are considered the most social of all the feline species.  

The termites of the world outweigh human beings 10:1.  On average, a hedgehog's heart beats 300 times per minute.  

In the year 1878, the largest giant squid ever found was discovered in the North Atlantic, weighing in at 4 tons.  

A lion's roar can be heard for up to five miles. 
A blue whale's heart is the size of a car.

Anteaters protect their long claws by walking on their knuckles. This makes them appear to be limping.  





In a fight between a polar bear and a lion, the polar bear would win.

During World War II, Americans trained bats to drop bombs on the enemy.

An elephant can smell water up to three miles away.






Animals generate 30 times more waste than humans, which is around 1.4 billion tons per year.

An anteater is nearly six feet long, but its mouth is only one inch wide. 

The smell of a skunk can be detected by a human over a mile away.

A black panther is really a black leopard and has spots if you look very closely.

Iguanas, koala bears and komodo dragons all have two penises.  Female koala bears have two vaginas.

Most elephants weigh less than the tongue of a blue whale.

George Washington's teeth were made of elephant ivory and walrus tusks.

At birth, a panda bear is smaller than a mouse and only weighs about four ounces.  

Oysters can change from one gender to another and back again depending on which is best for mating.
